Ayurveda is a 5000 year old system of natural healing that has its origins in Vedic culture of India. More than a mere system of treating illness, Ayurveda is a science of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science). It reminds us that health is a balanced and dynamic integration between our environment, body and spirit.
According to Ayurveda, each person will be influenced by certain elements more than others. It categorizes the different constitutions (Prakriti) into three different doshas. Most peoples Prakriti is made of two or more doshas.
Vata - air and space
Pitta - fire and water
Kapha - earth and water
By understanding the qualities of our natural constitution we are better able to do what is needed to keep ourselves in balance.
Ayurveda treatments available in your home.
Shamana (pacification)
Treats and manages injuries and diseases that have manifested. Ayurveda has thousands of medicines and recipes consisting of herb, mineral, and biological products which can be used individually or in the form of compounds. These products are especially useful in calming the aggravated doshas and treating injuries, joints and other bodily discomfort (i.e., overused shoulders, pulled muscles, painful knees, etc). Two types that are commonly used are:
Kati Vasti
A wheat paste is used to make a circular ridge on the back of the patient. Medicated Ayurveda oil is poured and allowed to rest for varying times dependent on the patients condition.
Oil Picho
A piece of cloth or cotton is repeatedly dipped in oil and applied to certain parts of the body. Both the cloth and the oil have a combination of herbs that are specific to the patients current condition.
* All Shamana treatments are followed by a restorative yoga session. We recommend that they also be accompanied by modifications in food, as well as, oral herbs.
Abhyangam
A treatment to the body, scalp or face done with medicated oils, powders or poultices made with special herbs. It is an excellent therapy for promotion of metabolism, digestion and strength. It can be used in conjunction with other Ayurveda treatments or individually for the prevention and treatment of several ailments. It is generally followed by swedana (inducing the body to sweat). It is not just a luxurious treatment that will relax and rejuvenate the body but a holistic therapy that harmonizes the mind and body.
Poutli
A treatment where dried herb powders, fresh herbal leaves or medicated rice and milk are tied up in a poultice. The poultice is then dipped in warm oil and massaged over the body. The treatment is followed by a hot shower or medicated steam. It is especially useful in the alleviation of painful joints when done in a series and in conjunction with other Ayurveda therapies. Like all Ayurveda treatments, it helps balance the doshas and rejuvenates the mind, body and spirit.
Shirodhara
A treatment involving the flow of liquids (warm oil, medicated milk, buttermilk) on the forehead through the shirodhara pot onto the third eye (which is said to be the seat of human consciousness). As the liquid strokes the third eye it has a balancing effect on the deepest recesses of the brain and will take you into a state of expanded consciousness and serenity. It is also an excellent treatment for anxiety, insomnia, headaches and fear.
Specialized Back Marma
Marma is a juncture on the body where two or more types of tissues meet. Yet, marma points are much more than a casual connection of tissue and fluids, they are the intersections of the vital life force and prana. The idea behind treating the marma points is to cleanse blocked energy by either arousing or calming the doshas (vata, pitta, kapha). The guiding principle is to harmonize the body's rhythm and leave you feeling rejuvenated while helping to alleviate many of your back challenges.
Face Treatments
Using only the most natural of products (some of them right from the kitchen shelf), this face treatment is an experience that will take you into another realm and leave your skin feeling remarkably fresh.. It is also useful in helping to alleviate many skin challenges.

I wish for every individual healing in mind, soul and body, an experience such as I have had in working with Shibana.
